Box cookers are boxes with a top replaced by a panel of glass or plastic to trap the heat. The cooking container is placed inside the box. Reflectors redirect the light towards the center of the oven. They are good for baking, and boiling food. Typical temperatures range from 250-400°F. They cook like a home oven or a slower cooker.
Panel cookers look like an open box with the inside surface covered with reflective material. The light is directed towards the cooking container inside a glaze. They are good for baking and boiling food. Typical temperatures range from 250-300°F. They cook like a slow cooker.
Evacuated tube cookers are tubes with two layers of glass. Food is cooked inside the tube and cookers can get up to 550°F. They can bake food as well as boil water.
Parabolic solar cookers have reflective material in a curved shape which concentrates light into a small area for focused heating at high temperatures. They are good for stir frying. Their temperatures can get hotter than 400°F and start fires, so they must be watched.
*Fresnel lens and trough solar cookers are less commonly used.
